Annabelle Shelton was commissioned to produce a site specific piece for Northampton Rail Station. A photographic installation of ‘people in place’ took on a serendipitous journey. A series of photographs of people were taken, going about their routines at a train Station, waiting for a train, walking through the barriers and waiting for arrivals.
Annabelle photographed peoples reflections “there are many reflective surfaces at a train station that absorb the daily goings on”. Wanting to work with this idea Annabelle was able to photograph the reflections and reintroduce the photograph to the original place. ‘Sidebox’ a small phone box that the train guards use Annabelle captures the barriers in action and installs the photograph on the side panel of the phone box.
Telescreen works in the same way where a large photo was installed into the information screen overhanging the platform. The image is of a group of people waiting for the arrival of the next train. On closer inspection you realise that the reflection is not live but still and only reveals a moment in the past.
There were technical and health and safety considerations that had to be met and some of the works had to be placed other to their original locations under the instruction of the Rail Station.
Based in the town of Northampton ‘Open Spaces Open Places’ commissioned 5 artists to make new work in site specific places.
